2012 Fantasy Baseball Draft Player Rankings - Catchers

  1. Victor Martinez - (OUT FOR YEAR) Martinez earns top honors for the 2012 catcher class. Count on him hitting .300 with about 20 homeruns in a strong Detriot lineup. He is one of the few solid sure thing backstops and you really can‘t go wrong with him.
  2. Mike Napoli - Do not draft Napoli expecting him to hit .320 again. 2011 was a bit of an outlier with his true talent likely being a .270/30 homerun guy, which still secures his place as a top tier catcher and worth a spot on your team.
  3. Brian McCann - Brian “Blind as a Bat” McCann is a model of consistency. 20+ power and a .275 BA makes him a valuable player to fill the C slot. One of the safest picks that at a premium position that won‘t cost you a top pick.
  4. Carlos Santana - Look for Santana‘s batting eye to develop and add a healthy 20 points to his batting average and club some 25 homers again. 2012 will be another year of growth for Carlos and he‘s only getting better.
  5. Joe Mauer - Mauer, should he stay healthy, will put together a good, but not MVP caliber season. A .320/12/80 slash line would be reasonable to expect next year. Be careful to not overreach for this guy expecting anything near 30 bombs and a .370 though.
  6. Buster Posey - A fully recovered Buster Posey will sniff 20 HRs and a .300 average in 2012 which makes him a good option for your fantasy lineup. This former ROY winner is very good and still improving.
  7. Matt Wieters - Wieters will build on a solid 2011 campaign and we should see improvements in his hitting and OBP while keeping his 20 home run power. If you notice he falls in your draft don‘t be afraid to snatch him.
  8. Alex Avila - Avila is a solid 2nd tier catcher who could very well be overlooked by many people. .275/18 is not out of the question, which can be more than serviceable if you notice all the big name catchers disappearing off the board.
  9. Miguel Montero - Montero is very similar to Avila, albeit with a bit less power. He is another underrated guy that will put up solid numbers later in the draft, allowing you to focus on getting those impact bats early on.
  10. Yadier Molina - Molina had a career 2011, so one should temper their expectations a bit. .285/10/65 should be the level of production you count on out of this Molina brother.
  11. J.P. Arencibia - If you don’t mind punting your team batting average a bit and are just looking for some decent power in the mid rounds, then J.P. is your guy. Expect an ugly .230 Carlos Pena-ian average but easy 20+ power. Following suit with the Jays hitting philosophy of high power low OBP, he will give you solid home runs and little else.
  12. Geovany Soto - If Soto can build on last season and avoid freak injury, he should be a very productive backstop. Approaching 20 homers and hitting .250 wouldn‘t be out of the question which is good bang for the buck in the later middle rounds.
  13. Wilson Ramos - The sophomore effort of Ramos will likely be a carbon copy of his first year. While he certainly has a bright future, in 2012 he won’t be much more than a .270/15 guy at best. Which is not bad of course but not worth reaching for based on hype or potential.
  14. Russell Martin - A higher batting average but less power than last year should be expected. Think .250 and maybe 15 homeruns in a decent but uninspiring season.
  15. Kurt Suzuki - Suzuki should continue his career trend of hitting to the tune of .250 and 15 or so home runs in a year where his numbers are indistinguishable from those of Martin‘s.
  16. Chris Iannetta - Mid .240’s with 15 homerun power. About as middle of the road as you can get catcher-wise.
  17. Jarrod Saltalamacchia - Expect a rerun of last year‘s numbers with a slightly higher batting average, 245/15.
  18. John Buck - 17 homers and a BA south of .240.
  19. Ramon Hernandez - 10+ shots and a .275 Nothing more, nothing less.
  20. Jonathan Lucroy - Look for Lucroy to repeat his 2011 season with another .265/12 line.
  21. Carlos Ruiz - A .275 guy with warning track power that should keep him under 10 long balls. Not exactly the kind of guy you want starting for you.
  22. Nick Hundley - Should hit upwards of .250 and 10 homeruns in the spacious confines of Petco.
  23. Rod Barajas - Barajas should be good for another 16 homeruns and a .230 average. Depending on how your league scores he could be a serviceable backup.
  24. Devin Mesoraco - If you feel like taking a flier on a Red’s rookie Mesoraco could provide good value late in the draft. A .260 average and a dozen homerun would certainly be conceivable.
  25. Ryan Doumit - Doumit is no stranger to the DL, but when he plays he isn‘t half bad. 10+ homers and a .270 average should he stay healthy, but that is a gigantic if.
  26. A.J. Pierzynski - This veteran should be good for another .280/9 season.
  27. Jorge Posada - Posada the ageless wonder just keeps on keeping on. .240/12 which doesn‘t make him starting material anymore.
  28. Miguel Olivo - Seemingly devoid of OBP skills, Olivo‘s main skill set is power. However he doesn‘t have much of it and his on base skills.
  29. Josh Thole - This is not a guy you want on your team. Refrain from putting Josh Thole in your lineup at all costs.
  30. Jason Varitek - Jason Varitek should never be starting for your team. If you find that he is starting for your team, you have done something terribly wrong.
  31. Jesus Flores
  32. Kelly Shoppach
  33. Chris Snyder
  34. David Ross
  35. Taylor Teagarden
  36. Chris Coste
  37. Jeff Clement
  38. Dioner Navarro
  39. Jeff Mathis
  40. Max Ramirez
  41. Ivan Rodriguez
  42. Gerald Laird
  43. J.R. Towles
  44. Brian Schneider
